Crisis Averted By Quick Thinking Staff
The was a small fire (outdoors) at Brahma House last Sunday that caused some minor damage but mostly smoke problems and the building had to be evacuated. The building was reoccupied in about an hour.
The fire was caused by someone who carelessly was smoking on the side of the house and attempted to extinguish the lighted material by burying it into the mulch. The mulch smoldered and burned two electrical cords (from christmas lights) and a storm water pvc pipe. The smoke traveled into the basement via the pvc pipe filling it with smoke. The staff and kids smelled the smoke before the fire alarm sensors picked up the scent! It goes to show that your nose is better than tens of thousands of dollars of fire detection equipment. The fire department came out and checked the situation and declared the problem solved after running the garden hose on the mulch and running a high powered fan to remove the smoke from the house.
