TRENTON - A 14-year-old girl living at the Anchor House home for runaways was in critical condition at a Philadelphia hospital yesterday after she allegedly was assaulted by another teen at the home in South Trenton, police said. The victim was struck in the head with a crystal paperweight early Monday during an argument and was initially taken to Capital Health System at Fuld hospital in Trenton, but later transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children with bleeding in her brain, police said. The victim, whose identity was not made public, is in the hospital's intensive care unit. Police have charged a 13-year-old girl with the assault, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, police said yesterday. Her identity also was not made public.

The suspect yesterday was lodged at the Mercer County Youth Detention Center in Ewing on aggravated assault and weapon violations. A police spokesman said that the 14-year-old victim was arguing with the 13-year-old girl, who then picked up the paperweight and struck the victim on the side of her head. Trenton EMS said they were dispatched to Anchor House at 2:36 a.m. Monday to treat the victim. After the incident, the suspect fled from the home in the 400 block of Centre Street, but was apprehended later Monday at Gregory Elementary School on Rutherford Avenue, police said.

Judy Hutton, Anchor House's executive director, could not comment on much of the incident because it involved juveniles, other than to say that the two teens were residents and that staff members followed all protocol for such an incident. Anchor House operates several services for at-risk youths and their families from its Centre Street headquarters, including an emergency shelter, a transitional living program, counseling and violence prevention programs, and Angels Wings, a 24-hour program that cares for children who are victims of abuse or neglect.
